Backend Engineer - Protocol Platform
Build and operate backend services, APIs, data systems, and integrations powering Compound’s application layer and operational infrastructure. Work across blockchain and traditional software systems to process on-chain data, support wallets and financial partners, and deliver secure, reliable infrastructure for products and users.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate scalable backend services and APIs.
- Index, process, reconcile, and serve on-chain data.
- Handle blockchain-specific failures and data inconsistencies.
- Maintain contract interfaces, transaction workflows, event schemas, and release procedures.
- Develop services and data models for positions, portfolios, transactions, analytics, risk monitoring, notifications, and reporting.
- Own integrations with wallets, custodians, RPC providers, indexers, data platforms, and access providers.
- Build secure service-to-service architecture and access controls.
- Improve reliability through observability, monitoring, alerting, incident response, and operational tooling.
- Participate in architecture reviews, code reviews, and technical planning.
- Support protocol upgrades through migrations, backfills, reconciliation, monitoring, and rollout plans.
Requirements
- 4+ years of professional backend software engineering experience.
- Experience with Go, Python, TypeScript, or Rust.
- Distributed systems, API design, asynchronous processing, event-driven architecture, databases, caching, queues, data consistency, and service reliability.
- Experience with cloud production systems, containerized services, managed databases, networking, observability, and deployment pipelines.
- Authentication, authorization, secrets handling, least-privilege access controls, audit logging, and secure third-party integrations.
- Ability to own projects from system design through production deployment, monitoring, incident response, and improvement.
- Strong engineering judgment, written communication, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Ability to leverage AI-assisted development tools while maintaining code quality, security, and engineering judgment.
- Experience with backend systems for DeFi, fintech, exchanges, custodians, wallets, payments, or financial services.
- Working knowledge of EVM transaction flows, RPC providers, event logs, contract reads, ABI integrations, confirmations, finality, and chain reorganizations.
- Experience with blockchain or financial-data pipelines, reconciliation, idempotency, replay and backfill handling, and event sourcing.
- Familiarity with globally distributed backend services, API gateways, RPC proxies, caching layers, edge infrastructure, and authentication.
- Familiarity with Solidity and smart-contract architecture.
- Experience with custody or permissioned-access systems.
- Experience supporting external developers and partners through APIs, SDKs, webhooks, documentation, or developer tooling.
- Active interest in crypto, DeFi, financial markets, or open financial infrastructure.
