Backend Software Engineer II
Job Description:
Location: Boston, MA
Hybrid: 3 days/week in office
Chewy is looking for a Backend Software Engineer II to join our Pet Health engineering organization and help build the future of the Chewy and SmartPak experience.
In this role, you will work alongside a team of engineers from both Chewy and SmartPak on a significant integration and modernization roadmap focused on integrating fulfillment and shipping capabilities, and developing new features across the combined platforms.
About You
You are a hands-on software engineer who enjoys solving complex backend problems and building scalable applications and services. You will primarily develop within Chewy's Java and AWS-based technology stack, while partnering with engineers working within SmartPak's .NET environment.
What You'll Do
Design, develop, test, and deploy scalable backend applications and services using Java and modern cloud technologies
Build new capabilities supporting the integration of Chewy and SmartPak platforms
Develop services and APIs that connect e-commerce, catalog, fulfillment, and customer experiences
Partner with engineers across Chewy and SmartPak to understand existing systems and determine long-term integration approaches
Contribute to architectural and technical decisions as systems and capabilities are migrated or modernized
Write high-quality, maintainable code and participate in code reviews
Troubleshoot complex technical issues across distributed systems
Apply DevOps and software engineering best practices throughout the development lifecycle
Collaborate closely with Product, Engineering, and business partners to deliver customer-facing capabilities
What You'll Need
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related field, or equivalent years of experience
4+ years of experience developing backend applications using Java
Experience building scalable distributed systems and microservices
Experience designing and working with APIs and service-oriented architectures
Hands-on experience with cloud-based applications, preferably AWS
Strong understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, algorithms, and software design principles
Knowledge of professional software engineering practices including code reviews, testing, source control, CI/CD, and production operations
Ability to work effectively across teams and navigate complex technical integrations
Bonus
Experience with Spring Boot or similar Java frameworks
Experience with e-commerce, catalog, order management, or fulfillment systems
Familiarity with .NET or C#
Experience with event-driven architectures, messaging systems, or distributed systems
Experience with Kubernetes, Kafka, Terraform, or similar technologies
The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including but not limited to the candidate’s relevant experience, education, and work location. In addition, this position is eligible for 401k and a new hire and annual equity grant. C08+ positions may also be eligible for annual bonus.
