Commercial and Technical Manager (SG & East Asia/ Structural Steel & Scrap Trading)

Key Responsibilities

1. Structural Steel Sales & Value Engineering (60%)

  • Drive Sales Growth: Identify, tender and secure structural steel projects involving beams, columns, plates and related steel products with developers, main contractors, fabricators and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Value Engineering: Review structural designs and project requirements to identify alternative steel specifications, grades or material solutions that can optimize steel consumption and reduce overall project costs.

  • Technical Consultation: Work closely with clients, consultants and engineers to develop cost-effective solutions covering steel fabrication, erection and construction methodologies.

  • Estimation & Bidding: Prepare and review commercial estimates, quotations and technical proposals, ensuring that proposed solutions meet project specifications, applicable standards and commercial requirements.

  • Project Development: Monitor upcoming construction projects and tender opportunities, develop sales pipelines and convert identified opportunities into confirmed orders.

  • Stakeholder Management: Establish and maintain relationships with developers, consultants, main contractors, structural engineers, fabricators and other key stakeholders within the construction and steel industry.

  • Commercial Negotiation: Lead discussions on pricing, contractual terms, delivery schedules and other commercial matters to achieve profitable business outcomes.

  • Market Development: Identify new market opportunities and potential customers for structural steel products and value-engineering solutions.

2. Scrap Trading & Management (40%)

  • Scrap Sourcing: Develop and maintain sources for ferrous and non-ferrous scrap, including industrial generators, demolition contractors, scrap dealers and other relevant suppliers.

  • Procurement: Evaluate scrap availability, material quality, volume and pricing to identify commercially viable procurement opportunities.

  • Trading: Manage the buying and selling of scrap materials, negotiating prices, quality specifications, payment terms and delivery arrangements to optimize trading margins.

  • Supplier & Customer Relationships: Build and maintain relationships with scrap suppliers, buyers, dealers and other trading partners.

  • Quality & Inspection: Coordinate material inspection and verification to ensure scrap meets agreed specifications and quality requirements.

  • Logistics Coordination: Work with logistics providers and relevant parties to coordinate transportation, collection, delivery and related documentation.

  • Compliance: Ensure scrap procurement and trading activities comply with applicable environmental, regulatory and operational requirements.

  • Market Intelligence: Monitor local and international scrap market conditions, commodity prices, supply availability and demand trends to support purchasing and trading decisions.

  • Margin Management: Evaluate market movements and trading opportunities to maximize gross margins while managing commercial and market risks.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, Metallurgy, Business, or a related discipline.

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience in structural steel sales, steel trading, commercial management or related construction/steel industry roles.

  • Demonstrated experience in structural steel sales and/or value engineering within the construction industry.

  • Experience working with developers, main contractors, consultants, structural engineers or steel fabricators is preferred.

  • Established business network within the structural steel, construction or scrap metal industry will be advantageous.

  • Practical knowledge of structural steel products, steel grades, fabrication processes and structural design principles.

  • Knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap materials, including common grades, specifications, pricing and trading practices.

  • Strong commercial acumen with experience in pricing, tendering, contract negotiation and margin management.

  • Good understanding of construction project requirements, tender processes and commercial documentation.

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and/or structural analysis software is an advantage.

  • Strong analytical, negotiation and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical and commercial stakeholders.

  • Able to manage multiple commercial opportunities and priorities independently.
