Data & AI Engineer (12mth FTC)
Summary
12-month fixed-term Data & AI Engineer blending data engineering, analytics engineering and applied AI on GCP. Day-to-day work involves building BigQuery/SQL data models with Dataform, developing Looker semantic layers, and delivering AI solutions using Vertex AI, Gemini, RAG and BigQuery ML for Finance stakeholders.

This isn't a traditional Data Engineering role. You'll work across Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering and applied AI, helping build the foundations that allow the business to move beyond reporting towards more intelligent, data-driven decision making.
You'll work end-to-end, partnering directly with stakeholders to understand problems before designing and delivering production-ready solutions.
Location: Sydney (3 days/week in office)
Salary: $140k-145k base + Super + Bonus

You'll work end-to-end, partnering directly with stakeholders to understand problems before designing and delivering production-ready solutions.

What You'll Do
- Build and maintain trusted, analytics-ready data models using BigQuery, SQL and Dataform
- Develop scalable data transformations and orchestrated workflows across GCP
- Build and contribute to semantic data models that enable genuine self-service analytics
- Work with Looker, developing explores, measures and dimensions
- Partner directly with Finance stakeholders to translate business problems into technical solutions
- Build applied AI solutions using Vertex AI, Gemini, RAG and BigQuery ML
- Work on use cases including automated commentary, variance analysis, Q&A over data, scenario modelling and decision support
- Use Cloud Functions and Cloud Run for API-based and event-driven solutions
- Contribute to CI/CD, GitHub, code reviews and engineering best practices
- Use modern AI-assisted development tools to accelerate engineering and solution delivery
- Around 3–5 years' experience across Data Engineering, Analytics Engineering or a similar discipline
- Strong SQL skills and experience building clean, maintainable data models
- Commercial experience with GCP and BigQuery
- Experience with Dataform, dbt or another SQL-first transformation framework
- Exposure to Cloud Run, Cloud Functions or similar cloud-native architectures
- Experience with Looker or another semantic/BI layer
- Hands-on exposure to Generative AI, ideally Vertex AI, Gemini, RAG or BigQuery ML
- Experience taking Data or AI solutions beyond POCs and into real-world use cases
- Strong software engineering fundamentals including Git, CI/CD and code review
- Comfortable working directly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Curious, accountable and keen to continue growing your technical ownership
