Summary

Data Engineer supporting Azure-based data platforms that underpin environmental and scientific reporting for Queensland Government. Day-to-day work spans maintaining and troubleshooting Azure data pipelines (Data Factory, Databricks, Functions), designing ETL/ELT solutions, and collaborating with scientists and analysts.

Salary: AUD 900 - 1100 per day, Optional 12 Month

Data Engineer | Brisbane | Contract Role | Queensland Government

We're seeking an experienced Scientific Data Engineer to join a Queensland Government team supporting critical environmental monitoring, water quality reporting and scientific data initiatives.

This is an opportunity to work on meaningful projects that help inform environmental decision-making across Queensland, while leveraging modern Azure data technologies and collaborating with scientists, analysts and technical specialists.

The Role As the Scientific Data Engineer, you will be responsible for supporting and enhancing Azure-based data platforms, pipelines and applications that underpin scientific and environmental reporting.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Maintaining and supporting Azure-based data pipelines and integrations
  • Monitoring and resolving issues across Data Factory, Databricks, Azure Functions and related services
  • Designing, developing and optimising ETL/ELT solutions
  • Supporting upgrades, testing, deployments and release activities
  • Investigating incidents, defects and performance issues
  • Developing technical and operational documentation
  • Collaborating with scientists, analysts, developers and business stakeholders
  • Providing advice on data engineering standards, governance and best practices
  • Contributing to platform improvements that enhance reliability, scalability and operational efficiency
Essential Skills
  • Microsoft Azure data services, including:
    • Azure Data Factory
    • Azure Synapse Analytics
    • Azure Databricks
    • Azure Storage technologies
    • Azure Function Apps
  • Designing and supporting ETL/ELT data pipelines
  • Python development for data engineering and data processing
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement capabilities
Desirable Experience
  • Scientific, environmental or geospatial datasets
  • Public-facing data portals and reporting platforms
  • Queensland Government or large enterprise environments
  • FAIR data principles and open data practices
Qualifications
  • Demonstrated professional experience in Data Engineering, Data Platform Support or related ICT disciplines
  • Degree qualification in IT, Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering or a related field highly regarded
  • Relevant Microsoft Azure certifications highly desirable
