drafter

Job Description (Responsibilities)

A Landscape Drafter is primarily responsible for translating landscape design concepts into precise, technical drawings that can be used for construction. Key duties include:

Technical Drawing & Drafting: Creating detailed landscape construction drawings, including site plans, grading plans, planting plans, hardscape details, and cross-sections using CAD software.

Design Deepening: Taking preliminary or conceptual designs and developing them into detailed construction documents, ensuring all dimensions, materials, and construction methods are accurately specified.

Cross-disciplinary Coordination: Collaborating with architects, structural engineers, and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) professionals to ensure landscape drawings integrate seamlessly with other project disciplines and to resolve any spatial conflicts.

Construction Support: Participating in construction drawing handovers (technical briefings) for contractors, answering on-site technical questions, and preparing design change documents or site instructions as needed.

Standards Compliance: Ensuring all drafted drawings strictly adhere to national and local landscape construction standards, drawing conventions, and building codes.116

Job Requirements (Qualifications)

To be successful in this role, candidates typically need the following qualifications:

Education: A Bachelor’s degree (or sometimes an Associate degree) in Landscape Architecture, Environmental Art, Urban Planning, or a related field.

Software Proficiency: Highly skilled in industry-standard drafting and design software, particularly AutoCAD (often with Tianzheng plugins). Proficiency in SketchUp, Photoshop, Lumion, or Enscape for 3D modeling and rendering is also highly valued.

Technical Knowledge: A strong understanding of landscape construction techniques, hardscape materials (e.g., paving, retaining walls, water features), planting design, and structural basics.

Attention to Detail: Exceptional precision and rigorous attention to detail, as even minor drafting errors can lead to costly construction mistakes.

Experience: Typically requires 1 to 5 years of relevant landscape drafting experience, depending on the seniority of the position.

Soft Skills: Strong communication and teamwork skills to effectively coordinate with designers, engineers, and construction teams
