Engineering Manager
Job Summary
Provide engineering management for Singapore and Vietnam teams, leading technical solutions for Aluminium shipbuilding projects to ensure safety, feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and timely delivery within budget.
Responsibilities
- Lead and manage a multidisciplinary team of engineers, naval architects, designers, and drafters to deliver high-quality shipbuilding projects
- Provide technical and design expertise to develop safe, buildable, and cost-effective vessel designs that meet contractual requirements
- Schedule and coordinate design deliverables to align with project timelines and milestones
- Oversee technical review processes for procurement of main equipment and materials to ensure compliance with specifications
- Manage interactions with classification societies, flag states, and regulatory bodies to maintain certification and regulatory compliance
- Resolve technical issues collaboratively with OEMs, clients, classification societies, and flag states to ensure project continuity
- Apply expert knowledge in weight management and control throughout the vessel build process to maintain design integrity
- Lead technical execution of inclining experiments and lightship surveys to verify vessel stability and performance
- Develop and implement sea trial protocols, including loading conditions, to validate vessel operational readiness
- Collaborate closely with General Manager, Engineering, and senior management to align engineering objectives with business goals
- Negotiate contractual terms and resolve disputes effectively to protect company interests and maintain client relationships
- Maintain and update company design standards to reflect industry best practices and regulatory changes
- Drive continual design improvements to enhance product quality and competitiveness
- Communicate clearly and constructively with all staff levels to foster collaboration and feedback
- Build trust and rapport with internal teams and external stakeholders through genuine, respectful, and dependable interactions
- Liaise with shipyard personnel and management to ensure product performance aligns with organizational objectives
- Develop and sustain key relationships with partners, customers, contractors, suppliers, and official bodies to support project success
- Negotiate on behalf of the company, balancing realistic compromises with strategic goals
- Cultivate a strong network of industry suppliers, subcontractors, and contacts to support project needs
- Acquire and share comprehensive understanding of vessel specifications and performance with internal and external stakeholders
- Maintain thorough knowledge of classification and survey authority rules affecting product quality and performance
- Manage engineering documentation and reporting to ensure accurate and timely information flow
- Understand the scope and impact of engineering decisions across departments and projects to support integrated business outcomes
- Assist project managers in quantifying the implications of engineering decisions on other business areas
- Pursue professional development opportunities to enhance technical and leadership capabilities
- Demonstrate personal accountability for achieving objectives and driving continuous improvement
- Stay informed of industry best practices and competitor actions to maintain competitive advantage
Required competencies and certifications
- Minimum 7 years’ experience as a Senior Design Engineer or Naval Architect
- Minimum 5 years’ experience managing an engineering design department
- Proven experience working with Aluminium in the shipbuilding industry
- Formal qualifications in Naval Architecture or Mechanical/Marine Engineering
- Sound working knowledge of Classification Society Rules and Flag Regulations
- High-level negotiation and dispute resolution skills essential for managing contracts and stakeholder relationships
- Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to effectively manage teams and external partners
- Experience in contractual management to ensure compliance and protect company interests
- Established network of industry suppliers, subcontractors, and contacts to support project execution
