Part-time HR Manager

Working arrangement: Initially two days per week, office-based

Industry: Private security

A Cape Town-based private security company is looking for an experienced, hands-on HR Manager to lead and manage its HR function.

This is an operational management role within a workforce of approximately 100 employees. The successful candidate will work closely with the Director, provide practical HR guidance to managers and supervisors, and oversee an HR support employee.

The position will initially require the HR Manager to work from the company’s Cape Town office for two agreed days per week. There is potential for the position to develop into a full-time role as the needs of the business grow. Applicants should therefore be open to this possibility.

The person we are looking for

You are a practical and confident HR professional who can balance employee needs with operational and business requirements. You are comfortable dealing with sensitive matters, holding difficult conversations and giving clear advice. You can work strategically when required, but you are equally willing to manage the operational detail needed to keep the HR function running effectively.

  • Supervise, guide and quality-check the work of the HR support employee.
  • Advise the Director, managers and supervisors on employee relations and HR matters.
  • Manage disciplinary, grievance, incapacity, poor-performance and workplace-conflict processes.
  • Make or recommend disciplinary outcomes within the authority delegated to the role and escalate higher-risk matters appropriately.
  • Support recruitment, selection, onboarding, probation management and employee exits.
  • Ensure that employment contracts, employee records, leave, attendance and other HR documentation are accurate and up to date.
  • Review and verify payroll-related HR information before submission.
  • Ensure compliance with South African labour legislation, Employment Equity, Skills Development, POPIA and applicable security-sector requirements.
  • Coordinate performance management, employee development, training and workplace skills initiatives.
  • Maintain and improve HR policies, procedures and employee communication.
  • Support culture, employee engagement and organisational change initiatives.
  • Prepare relevant HR reports and provide management with practical recommendations.
  • Coordinate with external labour, compliance and service providers when required.
  • Contribute to remuneration, bonus and workforce-planning discussions with the Director.

Minimum requirements

  • A relevant diploma or degree in Human Resources, Industrial Psychology, Labour Relations or a related field.
  • At least five years’ broad HR generalist experience, including experience providing guidance to managers.
  • Strong working knowledge of South African labour legislation and employee-relations processes.
  • Practical experience managing disciplinary matters, grievances, poor performance and workplace conflict.
  • Experience supervising or guiding an HR administrator, officer or support employee.
  • Experience with payroll inputs, Employment Equity, Skills Development and HR reporting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and manage competing priorities.
  • A high level of confidentiality, professionalism and attention to detail.
  • The ability to work from the Cape Town office for two days per week.

Advantageous

  • Previous HR experience in the private security industry.
  • Experience in a labour-intensive, operational or 24-hour working environment.
  • Knowledge of PSIRA and employment requirements applicable to the private security sector.
  • Experience supporting approximately 100 or more employees.
