Platform Engineering Manager
Job Description
We are opening an Engineering Manager position to lead five platform domains: SDLC, Quality Engineering, Developer Experience, GenAI applied to engineering, and Observability. These squads build the technical foundation used by all engineering teams in the company, with internal products ranging from developer portals and CI/CD pipelines to AI agents embedded in the development cycle and observability platforms.
The position reports to the Foundation Engineering Manager and leads coordinators with teams composed of Developers, QAs, and SREs.
The goal is to have a person capable of autonomously taking on a relevant part of the area's technical and business decisions, including representation in architecture forums, roadmap prioritization, and conversations with product, security, and infrastructure stakeholders.
Domain Scope
• SDLC and Delivery Engineering: standardization of CI/CD pipelines, branching and release strategy, code owners, DORA metrics, dependency management, base images, static security integrated into the pipeline, and engineering maturity per squad.
• Quality Engineering: automated quality gates, testing strategy (contract, Mocks, E2E in critical flows), coverage, database migration linters, and quality governance before merge.
• Developer Experience: evolution of the internal developer portal (IDP), service catalog with ownership and operational health, self-service cloud resource provisioning, golden paths, templates, and technical onboarding journey for new hires.
• GenAI applied to engineering: AI agents for self-service provisioning, automatic code review with risk blocking in pull requests, and knowledge bases that guide development. Includes agent architecture, response quality evaluation, and adoption by teams.
• Observability: standard for logs, traces, and metrics, automated instrumentation from service creation, structured on-call, maturity scorecard per squad, and cost dashboards.
Responsibilities
• Lead coordinators and engineers across the five domains, being responsible for technical results, roadmap delivery, and people development.
• Build and defend the domain roadmap linked to business and engineering metrics: change failure rate, lead time, test coverage, MTTR, internal platform adoption, and reduction of operational support.
• Engage in the technical merit of each domain's decisions: review architecture proposals, question assumptions, request data, and refuse paths that increase complexity without clear return.
• Represent the area in architecture forums, security committees, and conversations with product and technology leadership, with autonomy to decide without escalating everything.
• Translate internal customer pain (dev, QA, SRE) into prioritized initiatives, with explicit value hypotheses and ways to measure adoption.
• Sustain the operation of what is already in production: reliability of internal platforms, technical debt, cost, and response to incidents involving the domains.
• Coordinate initiatives that cross domains and depend on product teams, negotiating deadlines and scope without transferring friction to the squads.
• Develop the leadership layer below: provide context, delegate decisions, calibrate performance, and build succession.
• Define and track quarterly goals per domain, with objective success criteria.
Qualifications
• Previous experience as a software, platform, or infrastructure engineer, with enough background to discuss code, architecture, and implementation trade-offs on equal footing with senior engineers.
• Mastery of CI/CD practices at scale: branching and release strategies, quality gates, versioning, rollback, and pipeline standardization for multiple stacks.
• Experience with public cloud (preferably AWS) and Kubernetes as a microservices execution base, including deployment and security strategies.
• Infrastructure as Code (Terraform) and automation of build, release, and provisioning processes.
• Applied observability: logs, metrics, and distributed tracing, instrumentation with OpenTelemetry, SLI/SLO definition, and on-call culture.
• Quality engineering as a technical discipline: testing pyramid, contract testing, regression automation, and use of quality data for decision-making.
• Practical understanding of GenAI applied to engineering: agents, RAG, output quality evaluation, inference cost, and limits of what makes sense to automate.
• DevSecOps: static analysis, vulnerability and dependency management, internal library governance, and security embedded in the pipeline instead of manual review.
• Platform-as-a-product mindset: discoverability, adoption, consumer team autonomy, and usage metrics.
Leadership Expectations
• Real autonomy: ability to lead a topic from end to end, decide with incomplete information, and take responsibility for the consequences.
• Critical thinking: question demands without clear value, even when they come from above, and propose alternatives instead of just refusing.
• Direct and accessible communication, with depth adjusted according to the audience: engineer, product manager, or executive leadership.
• Consultative decision-making: listen to the team and seek consensus before deciding, without turning it into paralysis.
• Conflict and expectation management between areas, without passing the burden to the squads.
• Focus on measurable results rather than delivery volume.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience leading an internal developer platform (Backstage or equivalent) with adoption metrics.
• Previous experience in Site Reliability Engineering or operating high-volume critical systems.
• Experience working in a regulated or sensitive data environment, with audit and compliance requirements.
• Experience putting AI into production within the development cycle, not just in proof of concept.
• Certifications in cloud, Kubernetes, or HashiCorp.
• Participation in technical communities, conferences, or open-source projects.
Requirements
• Experience in engineering team leadership, with at least one stint managing multiple squads or a leadership layer below.
• Track record of responsibility for platform, infrastructure, or development cycles, not just product teams.
• Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related fields, or equivalent experience.
• English for technical conversations with global teams.
