Join Akvelon — build products used by millions!
Akvelon is an IT company with 20+ years of experience and 1,200+ engineers across 15+ locations worldwide.
We work with both well-known global tech companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, Airbnb, Dropbox, and Pinterest, and with growing startups.
Our teams are involved in different types of engineering projects, from cloud solutions and AI/ML systems to big data, web, and mobile applications.
Since we are remote-first, our engineers work in distributed teams with flexible hours. We value ownership, clear communication, and the ability to take responsibility for your part of the work.
About the project
The project is a closed-loop wellness platform: a member mobile app, an advisor operations console, and a back office, on top of a deterministic scoring engine, a rules engine, and an integration layer. The central challenge is integration: consolidating around a dozen production systems (EMR, wearables, labs, billing, messaging) into one experience while handling Protected Health Information (PHI) end to end.
We start with a discovery phase and move into delivery, aiming for a limited pilot with a small cohort of members, with further phases planned afterward. The delivery team includes a Product Owner, Tech Lead, Mobile Engineer, two Backend/Integration Engineers, two Web Frontend Engineers, and a UI/UX Designer. You build production-grade backend services and selected integrations on the Google Cloud foundation owned by the Senior Backend / Integration + DevOps engineer: API features, data model, async jobs, reconciliation, authorization and consent, auditability, testing, and reliability.
Requirements
- 4+ years in backend engineering with TypeScript/Node.js in production
- Practical Google Cloud delivery experience: Cloud Run, Pub/Sub or Cloud Tasks, Cloud SQL, Cloud Storage
- Strong service design with Node.js/Fastify or a comparable framework, REST APIs, and webhooks
- PostgreSQL in depth: schema design, migrations, and query performance
- Distributed and asynchronous job processing: queues, scheduling, retries, idempotency
- Automated testing (unit, contract, integration) and production observability
- Security engineering for regulated systems: RBAC/ABAC, MFA integration, audit records, key and secrets rotation, least privilege
- Comfortable pairing closely with integration engineers and owning production-grade engineering beyond feature code, rather than expecting a platform team to resolve every runtime issue
- English B2+, comfortable in a client-facing team; meaningful overlap with US business hours
- Full-time availability, dedicated to this engagement
Nice to have
- Regulated-data or healthcare products where PHI/PII boundaries, consent, and auditability shape service design
- Third-party integrations with inconsistent APIs, webhooks, partial updates, and reconciliation
- Infrastructure as code and CI/CD pipelines on Google Cloud
- Deterministic scoring or rules packages with versioned, traceable outcomes
- AI-assisted, spec-driven development workflows with human-in-the-loop review
- Threat modeling and incident response participation
Responsibilities
- Implement the TypeScript API layer on Google Cloud Run using Node.js/Fastify, following the approved architecture and shared engineering standards
- Own assigned PostgreSQL/Cloud SQL schemas and migrations, Cloud Storage usage, Pub/Sub and Cloud Tasks processing, Cloud Scheduler and Cloud Run Jobs, caching, and rate limits
- Build selected backend and integration workflows, including reconciliation support and operator visibility
- Implement authorization, consent flags, PHI read audit logging, least privilege, secure support flows, and PHI-safe application logging, in coordination with the Tech Lead and the Senior Backend / Integration + DevOps engineer
- Contribute to CI quality gates, deployment configuration, service telemetry, integration fixtures, backup and restore validation, and runbooks, without becoming the primary infrastructure owner
- Support the scoring and rules packages with authoritative execution, versioned outcomes, traceability, and performance tests
- Use and evolve the AI-assisted, spec-driven development workflows established by the Tech Lead
