Senior Data Engineer

Summary

Senior Data Engineer building and supporting a Microsoft Fabric data platform for an Australian organisation migrating from legacy SQL Server and traditional data warehouse to a cloud-first Azure environment. Hands-on engineering plus stakeholder consulting, developing Lakehouse/Warehouse solutions, PySpark/Python/SQL ETL/ELT pipelines, and establishing engineering standards.

Salary: AUD 180000 - 210000 per annum

We're partnering with a well-established Australian organisation undergoing a major data platform transformation. As part of their move from legacy SQL Server and traditional data warehouse technologies to Microsoft Fabric, they're looking to add an experienced Senior Data Engineer to their growing Data & Reporting team.

While you'll be hands-on building data solutions, the organisation isn't looking for someone who simply takes requirements and delivers what's been requested. They're looking for an engineer who can work with senior stakeholders to understand the problem, present different approaches, explain the pros and cons of each, and help shape the right outcome. Once a direction has been agreed, you'll take ownership of delivering a practical, scalable solution that works for both the business and the technology team.

The Opportunity
As a Senior Data Engineer, you'll be a senior individual contributor responsible for designing, building and supporting a modern Microsoft Fabric data platform. You'll play a key role in the migration from legacy SQL Server and traditional data warehouse technologies into a cloud-first environment.

The role offers a blend of:
  • Hands-on engineering and solution design
  • Technical leadership
  • Stakeholder engagement and solution consulting
  • Production support and platform optimisation
You'll work closely with engineering, architecture and leadership teams to deliver scalable and reliable data solutions that support reporting, analytics and future AI initiatives.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and develop enterprise-scale data solutions using Microsoft Fabric
  • Build and optimise Lakehouse, Warehouse and data pipeline capabilities
  • Support the migration and modernisation of legacy data platforms
  • Develop scalable ETL/ELT frameworks and reusable engineering patterns
  • Establish engineering standards, best practices and delivery approaches
  • Monitor and optimise platform performance, reliability and operational support
  • Work closely with technical and business stakeholders to deliver practical outcomes
  • Contribute to DevOps, automation, governance and continuous improvement initiatives

About You

Microsoft Fabric experience is a mandatory requirement for this position. The team already has strong knowledge of the existing environment and is specifically looking for someone who has previously helped build, implement and mature modern data platforms using Fabric. This is not a role for someone whose experience has been primarily focused on supporting established platforms. The successful candidate will have been involved in platform modernisation initiatives, understands the challenges of migrating legacy data environments, and can bring practical experience from similar transformations.

You'll bring experience across:
  • Microsoft Fabric, including Lakehouse, Warehouse and data pipeline development
  • Data engineering and enterprise data platforms
  • Data warehouse modernisation and migration initiatives
  • PySpark, Python and SQL development
  • ETL/ELT design and data pipeline engineering
  • Azure-based data technologies
  • Working across both project delivery and production support environments
Just as importantly, you'll be comfortable working directly with senior stakeholders. You'll be able to present different technical approaches, explain the trade-offs of each option, and help stakeholders make informed decisions. The strongest candidates will combine strong engineering capability with sound judgement, clear communication and a pragmatic approach to delivery.
