Senior Data Platform Engineer
You'll play a key role in Medium's Data Platform team, building and evolving the data infrastructure that powers Medium's business. You'll own the reliability, performance, and long-term architecture of the systems that data scientists and engineers depend on every day, from ingestion and transformation to orchestration and observability. Your work will support personalized recommendations, writer statistics, subscription payments, and content distribution. The role blends data engineering, DevOps, SRE, and backend software engineering while balancing critical system reliability with long-term platform transformation.
Responsibilities
- Build, maintain, and modernize Medium's data infrastructure.
- Own data infrastructure reliability by identifying risks, improving observability, and reducing toil.
- Partner with engineers and stakeholders to design trustworthy platform systems.
- Contribute to the platform roadmap and migrate end-of-life systems to modern alternatives.
- Write and review Python tooling for pipeline orchestration, data quality, and infrastructure automation.
- Apply DevOps and SRE practices for uptime, monitoring, alerting, and deployment.
- Mentor teammates and improve standards for reliability, documentation, and platform ergonomics.
- Attend Medium's twice-yearly in-person offsites in locations around the U.S.
Requirements
- 4–6 years of experience across data engineering, backend engineering, DevOps, or SRE.
- Proficiency in Python, demonstrated during the interview process.
- Experience with data pipeline tooling such as Snowflake, dbt, Spark, or similar.
- Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS and some backend services experience.
- Ability to assess technical debt pragmatically and advocate for sustainable improvements.
- Strong systems instincts, adaptability, collaboration, and willingness to learn.
