Senior Pharmacy Manager

Pay Range:$86.16 - $120.89

The Senior Pharmacy Operations Manager provides centralized operational leadership and coordination across the organization. This role is responsible for supporting local Pharmacy Managers in the provision of safe, consistent, compliant, and efficient operations for a full range of clinical pharmacy services throughout the organization. This role functions across all pharmacy care settings to assist in alignment of daily operations in each practice area with organizational goals. This position focuses on optimizing workflows, managing staff, maintaining regulatory compliance, and improving patient care outcomes and functions through collaboration with other clinical and non-clinical departments to ensure safe, efficient, patient-centered, and cost-effective services across all pharmacy locations.

Essential Functions and Accountabilities of the Job

  • Participates in Pharmacy manager recruitment and performance evaluation activities

  • Works with Systems Director of Pharmacy to ensure quality control of pharmacy services through monitoring and implementation of quality improvement initiatives. Assists in the monitoring and controlling of Departmental resources and helps identify service line expansion opportunities and cost-saving opportunities. Assist with peer reviews of clinical pharmacy services including direct patient care.

  • Assists in maintaining readiness for inspections and accreditation reviews by ensuring all Federal, State, and Accreditation requirements are met. Maintains departmental policies and procedures, ensuring accessible and accurate information is available to all staff.

  • Oversees pharmacy information systems, automation, and dispensing technologies and partners with IT to maintain system integrity and implement upgrades. Leverages data analytics to improve operational performance and monitoring throughout the organization.

  • Serves as Co-chair of the Organizations Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee. Identifies/problem-solves formulary and medication utilization challenges. Assists with monitoring/evaluating reported medication errors and adverse drug reactions. Formulates/evaluates drug utilization reviews.

  • Monitors and ensures compliance with standardized staff onboarding, training, and competency assessments. Assists with training pharmacists and technicians as needed to ensure staff follow policy and procedures.

  • Assists with the monitoring of rural clinic medication distribution including formulary decisions and distribution challenges.

  • Required field travel to Pharmacies and Rural Clinics as needed.

  • Maintains ability to cover acute/outpatient pharmacy services as needed. Able to review prescriptions/orders for appropriateness, legality, completeness, contraindications, interactions, allergies, adverse drug reactions, lab value abnormalities and follow up by screening patient's chart. Provides clinical consultation and clarification and is able to resolve any questions/concerns with prescribers prior to dispensing. Able to advise patients regarding medication use in a clear, accurate, and complete manner. Documents all clinical activities and interventions.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises the Pharmacy department as and when needed.

Additional Details:

Education, Certifications, and Licenses Required

  • Pharm.D. degree and licensure as a registered pharmacist.

  • Candidates licensed prior to 2003 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree will be considered, provided they have 7 years of progressive clinical pharmacy experience.

  • For direct hire employees: an unrestricted active license as a registered pharmacist.

  • For Commissioned Officers: an unrestricted active license as a registered pharmacist in any state.

  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (CPR and AED).

  • ACLS certification preferred.

  • PALS certification is preferred.

  • Clinical Competency required within 3 months of hire and subsequently every three years.

  • High Risk Competency required within 3 months of hire and subsequently every three years.

Experience Required

  • 5 years of clinical pharmacy experience and 5 years of progressive leadership experience, gained either concurrently or separately.

  • Of the leadership experience, at least 3 years must have been in a hospital setting, 2 years must have been in an outpatient setting, and 2 years are strongly preferred to have been in a supervisory pharmacy role.

Knowledge of

  • Strong knowledge of pharmacy operations, regulations, and medication-use systems

  • Knowledge of pharmacy automation, health system technology, and computer applications necessary to perform duties

  • Knowledge in drug therapy and the ability to meet the pharmaceutical needs of all patients

  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, safety and security issues, and clinic policies and procedures.

Skills In

  • Leadership, multi-disciplinary collaboration, project management, problem-solving, and workflow optimization.

  • Effective communication skills – both verbal and written.

  • Computer application skills, data analysis and interpretation, performance monitoring

  • Math skills are required in the accurate calculation of drug dosages, both oral and intravenous as well as compound formulations.

Ability to

  • Work independently and handle stress appropriately

  • Work cooperatively within health systems and pharmacy staff

  • Handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.

Travel Required

  • Limited travel required.

  • Travel is by jet, small aircraft, and boat.

Safety and Risk Management Responsibilities

  • Employees are responsible for complying with safe work rules; reporting all accidents and injuries immediately; cooperating in all accident and injury investigations; reporting defective equipment and unsafe conditions.

Physical Demands

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.

  • The employee is frequently required to stand for extended periods of time (usually, 8 hours); walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel and reach with hands and arms.

  • The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.

  • The employee may frequently lift and/or push/pull up to 30 lbs.

Work Environment

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

  • The setting for this role will include office and healthcare settings. Exposure to controlled temperature environments, both hot and cold, is to be expected.

  • This position requires handling hazardous substances.

  • This position requires walking to patient care areas throughout the building.

  • There is potential for exposure to infectious patients or materials.

  • There is potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items.

  • There is potential for musculoskeletal injuries.

  • There is potential for harm from burglary or robbery.

  • The normal work routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.
