Senior Software Engineer

Summary

Design and maintain internal software tools and methodologies that help Arm's silicon engineers build and optimize complex chips, sitting at the intersection of software engineering and digital hardware design. Core stack: Python on Linux with CI/automated testing and EDA-tool integration; Rust, C++, Tcl, and SystemVerilog are nice-to-haves.

Job Overview:

Help shape how the next generation of Arm chips are built!

The Solutions Engineering group at Arm is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to join our UK methodology team, developing internal tools and methodologies that help engineers build and optimize complex silicon.

As Arm builds on the success of the recently released AGI CPU in production silicon, we are investing in software and automation that can make increasingly sophisticated chip development faster and more effective. This is an opportunity to apply strong software engineering skills to challenging problems with a direct impact on future Arm silicon!

The role sits at the intersection of software engineering and digital hardware design, with a particular focus on timing constraints, design analysis and silicon implementation methodology. The team collaborates with experienced silicon engineers across Solutions Engineering, turning complex domain problems into robust, maintainable software.

Deep VLSI experience is not essential. We are primarily looking for an excellent software engineer who is curious about digital hardware and interested in learning how modern processors and SoCs are designed.

Our team has a collaborative engineering culture built around technical curiosity, pragmatic solutions and constructive challenge.

Responsibilities:

The role involves designing and maintaining software used within Arm's silicon development flows, developing algorithms to analyze and optimize design data, and integrating with EDA tools and compute infrastructure.

As a senior engineer, you'll also help set technical direction and maintain a high standard of software quality through architecture discussions and effective code review.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Deliver robust, maintainable software for complex engineering workflows
  • Turn silicon design and timing problems into effective software solutions
  • Review code to identify bugs, maintainability issues and opportunities for optimization
  • Apply modern engineering practices including automated testing, CI and performance analysis

Required Skills and Experience :

  • Strong professional software engineering experience, with a track record of delivering substantial software systems or engineering tools
  • Strong professional Python development experience, including software design, debugging and testing
  • Strong code review skills, including understanding unfamiliar code, identifying correctness issues and providing constructive technical feedback
  • Good knowledge of algorithms, data structures and software architecture
  • Experience developing software in Linux environments using modern version control, testing and CI practices
  • A degree in computer science, software engineering, electronics engineering or another relevant STEM discipline, or equivalent professional experience

“Nice To Have” Skills and Experience :

Relevant experience might include some of the following:

  • Rust development, particularly for performance-sensitive, concurrent or systems-oriented applications
  • Semiconductor, VLSI, EDA, scientific computing or another engineering-intensive domain
  • Synchronous digital design concepts, including registers or flip-flops, clocks, combinational logic and clock domains
  • Timing constraints, static timing analysis or RTL-to-GDS implementation flows
  • Microprocessor architecture, Arm IP or Arm-based SoCs
  • Optimization, large-scale data processing or performance-sensitive software
  • Additional languages such as C++, Tcl or SystemVerilog
  • LLM-based coding assistants such as Codex or Claude Code, including reviewing and validating AI-generated code

In Return:

This role offers the opportunity to have a direct impact on how some of Arm's most advanced silicon is developed. You'll have considerable scope to shape our software and methodology, while working with experienced silicon engineers across Solutions Engineering and developing deeper knowledge of VLSI and chip implementation. Our UK methodology team values technical autonomy, continuous improvement and giving engineers the space to solve difficult problems well.

We value strong software engineering and curiosity over an exact match to every desirable skill. Candidates interested in the role should consider applying even if they don't meet every item listed above.
