Staff Software Engineer, Android Infrastructure, Google Home
Summary
Staff engineer leading Android infrastructure for the Google Home team, driving system reliability, crash reduction, state-sync latency, and migration to a unified Home Platform architecture. Core stack: Android, Java, Python, Go, C++, plus TypeScript/JavaScript, with IoT focus on Matter, Thread, and BLE.
Google's software engineers develop the next-generation technologies that change how billions of users connect, explore, and interact with information and one another. Our products need to handle information at massive scale, and extend well beyond web search. We're looking for engineers who bring fresh ideas from all areas, including information retrieval, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking and data storage, security, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, UI design and mobile; the list goes on and is growing every day. As a software engineer, you will work on a specific project critical to Google’s needs with opportunities to switch teams and projects as you and our fast-paced business grow and evolve. We need our engineers to be versatile, display leadership qualities and be enthusiastic to take on new problems across the full-stack as we continue to push technology forward.
The App Surfaces team is the primary front door to the Google Home ecosystem, owning the user-facing interaction canvas across Core Mobile, Smart Displays, and Cross-Surfaces.

- Drive the pivot towards treating application, mobile as "infrastructure and quality as a platform" to ensure consistency, scalability, and developer velocity across the organization.
- Lead dedicated engineering swarms to eliminate crashers, improve state-sync latency, and resolve functional detractors.
- Own system health by monitoring and improving crucial application performance metrics like latency, memory footprint, and crash rates, with a goal of achieving a crash-free user rate.
- Guide the architectural migration to the Google Home Platform and lead the deprecation of legacy systems. Focus on reducing bloated and legacy application infrastructure to allow teams to build and ship features faster, rather than months.
- Oversee the deployment pipeline, build/release flags, and on-call operations. Shift the organization towards automated, self-serve infrastructure delivery model to help vertical teams onboard and support major launches.
