Summary
Staff UX Engineer on Google's Hardware team defining spatial/AR interaction models and prototyping emerging XR device experiences, working closely with designers, researchers, and engineers using Unity, OpenXR, WebXR, Figma, and Adobe Creative Cloud.
Design is at the forefront of everything we do. As a UX Engineer on the Google Hardware team, you will leverage your breadth as a UX Engineer and technologist with your depth in spatial UX to define every aspect of an emerging device category with very little precedent in the real world.
You will work closely with Software Engineers, Interaction Designers, Visual designers, UX Researchers, Product leads and Hardware teams to bring spatial experiences to life, shaping how users interact with this groundbreaking technology, and laying the foundation for new interaction models and design patterns that influence future product generations. As part of a small team, you’ll need to be inventive and creative in building prototypes that explore new interaction models and experiences, sometimes filling in as a UX designer when you come across gaps or open questions.

- Develop and contribute to AR system architecture, interaction model, and UI framework in close collaboration with UX team and cross functional partners.
- Own and deliver prototyping work as part of a prototype-driven design and discovery process.
- Partner with cross-functional and cross-product teams, including but not limited to interaction, visual and industrial designers and User Research to define the product goals, contribute to product strategy, and execute on the aligned goals.
- Solve ambiguous and complex design problems involving both screen-space and spatial design.
- Help define visionary but pragmatic interaction design systems and patterns, execute on final designs, and communicate user narratives with strategic reasoning behind design decisions
Minimum qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, or a related technical field or equivalent practical experience.
- 8 years of experience in a Technical, UX, or Design setting, or related experience.
- Experience in physical prototyping, interaction design, and design processes.
- Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary teams of Designers, Researchers, Engineers, Content Strategists and Product Managers throughout the design process.
- Experience prototyping and developing user experiences across various XR platforms using tools like Unity, OpenXR and WebXR.
- Experience with design tools like Figma and Adobe Creative Cloud.
Preferred qualifications:
- Experience in collaborating with User Research to craft usability studies for prototypes.
- Familiarity with ARCore, Jetpack Compose, and Material Design.
- Demonstrated ability to take design concepts from drawing board to shipped features.
- Effective communicator across different functions with the ability to understand different perspectives, articulate positions, and advocate for user needs.
