Streaming Engineer (JavaScript)

Mayflower

is a technology company building high-load products used by millions of people worldwide. Operating at the scale of one of the world's top-50 websites, we solve complex engineering challenges and create solutions that power real-time entertainment for a global audience.

We’re hiring a Streaming Engineer (JavaScript). Unlike classic web development, our focus is on high-load, real-time video experiences. You will build and optimize the player layer, work with binary protocols, and ensure smooth playback for millions of users.

Job Responsibilities

Video & Streaming Core: Develop and maintain the video player engine, including adaptive bitrate (ABR) logic, buffer management, and low-latency streaming (WebRTC / HLS / Low-Latency DASH).

Network & Data Layer: Implement and optimize binary protocol parsers for real-time media delivery. Manage DNS resolution, TLS handshake optimization, and upgrade from HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2/3 (QUIC) to reduce TTFB and rebuffering.

Frontend Application

Design and implement new functionality for the main website using React/TypeScript, including performance optimization and enhancement of existing features.

Architecture & Scale: Participate in designing scalable, fault-tolerant systems for high-load environments. Work with Micro Frontends and modularization to isolate the player from the main UI.

Quality & Reliability: Write unit/integration tests for both business logic and media pipelines. Profile memory leaks (Chrome DevTools, Performance/Memory tabs) and resolve client-side lags (e.g., 10-min freeze issues due to GC or buffer overflows).

Security & Integration: Identify and resolve CORS, CSP, and security vulnerabilities. Support migration to new API interfaces and maintain shared libraries (Webpack, Rollup, esbuild).

Job Requirements (You’ll thrive here if you have):

Core JS (Critical): 6+ years with JavaScript (Vanilla JS, Event Loop, Scope, Context, Prototype, SSR, Isomorphic Apps).

Streaming Experience (Mandatory):

  • Hands-on experience with live-streaming on the frontend (WebRTC, MSE – Media Source Extensions, or EME – Encrypted Media Extensions).
  • Deep understanding of binary protocol parsing (ArrayBuffer, DataView, TypedArrays) and network debugging (DNS, CORS, WebSockets).
  • Framework & Builds: Proficiency in React/Preact, TypeScript, Redux, ES2020, Node.js, Sass. Expert-level with build systems (Webpack/Rollup + esbuild, Babel).
  • Networking: Solid knowledge of AJAX, WebSockets, Server-Side Events (SSE), HTTP/1.1 vs HTTP/2, and CORS security policies.
  • Testing & Debugging: Experience with unit testing, profiling, and debugging (client/server-side). Ability to use -- Chrome Performance & Memory tools to detect leaks.
  • English: Technical English (tasks and documentation are in English).
