Join Akvelon — build products used by millions!
Akvelon is an IT company with 20+ years of experience and 1,200+ engineers across 15+ locations worldwide. We work with both well-known global tech companies, including Microsoft, Facebook, Airbnb, Dropbox, and Pinterest, and with growing startups.
Our teams are involved in different types of engineering projects, from cloud solutions and AI/ML systems to big data, web, and mobile applications.
Since we are remote-first, our engineers work in distributed teams with flexible hours. We value ownership, clear communication, and the ability to take responsibility for your part of the work.
About the project
The project is a closed-loop wellness platform: a member mobile app, an advisor operations console, and a back office, on top of a deterministic scoring engine, a rules engine, and an integration layer. The central challenge is integration: consolidating around a dozen production systems (EMR, wearables, labs, billing, messaging) into one experience while handling Protected Health Information (PHI) end to end.
We start with a discovery phase and move into delivery, aiming for a limited pilot with a small cohort of members, with further phases planned afterward. The delivery team includes a Product Owner, Tech Lead, Mobile Engineer, two Backend/Integration Engineers, two Web Frontend Engineers, and UI/UX support. The Senior Backend/Integration Engineer also owns hands-on DevOps and GCP platform delivery, while the Tech Lead remains accountable for the overall solution architecture and technical decisions. As the named technical lead you own the solution architecture, work with stakeholders directly, own the deterministic scoring package yourself, and stay hands-on all the way to the pilot.
Requirements
- 10+ years in software engineering, including 4+ years owning architecture or technical delivery as a Tech Lead and/or Solution Architect on production-grade applications
- Hands-on TypeScript/Node.js, with the ability to review architecture and critical changes across mobile, web, backend, data, and cloud infrastructure; another modern backend language is a plus
- Delivered a healthcare or other regulated product handling PHI/PII, with audit logging, least privilege, encryption, retention, and BAA-aware vendor selection
- Solution architecture: service design, data modeling, API design, and picking canonical sources of truth across systems
- Integration-heavy and API-heavy delivery: inconsistent third-party APIs, webhooks, retries, idempotency, reconciliation, auth methods, and source-of-truth decisions
- Designed a deterministic, versioned, auditable calculation or rules engine: server-authoritative, portable, properly tested (for us, a dependency-free shared TypeScript package)
- Strong experience with the project's target stack: Next.js/React + TypeScript, React Native/Expo, Node.js/Fastify, PostgreSQL/Cloud SQL, and Google Cloud services including Cloud Run, Cloud Storage, Pub/Sub / Cloud Tasks, IAM, and observability
- Established AI-assisted development and spec-driven workflows for a team, with human-in-the-loop review, not personal tool use only
- Direct stakeholder work: leading discovery, defending architectural decisions, communicating with technical and executive audiences
- Strong ownership: ADRs and runbooks, estimation, dependency management, calm escalation under ambiguity
- English C1 preferred, comfortable client-facing; meaningful overlap with US business hours
Nice to have
- Wearable/health-data aggregators or EMR systems
- LLM/AI features under compliance constraints (BAA-covered inference, logging, guardrails)
- Stripe, Google Cloud Identity Platform or other managed identity solutions, managed queues/jobs, and monorepo tooling
- SOC 2 readiness and state consumer-health privacy regimes
- Running a fixed-length discovery that ends in an agreed MVP cutline and decision log
- Turnkey engagements with knowledge transfer and joint-maintenance handoffs
Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end solution architecture across mobile, web, backend, data, scoring/rules engines, integrations, and the Google Cloud platform
- Lead the four-week discovery: integration inventory (purpose, data direction, auth, criticality, fallbacks per system), canonical data ownership, MVP cutline, ADRs, and a risk register
- Define canonical sources of truth per data type and the reconciliation approach across existing production systems
- Own the deterministic scoring package: calculation model, versioning, test strategy, auditability, server-authoritative execution
- Make and defend key architectural decisions for the service layer, GCP hosting model, authentication, data architecture, asynchronous processing, and PHI controls, with maintainability, security, and long-term hireability in mind
- Partner with the Senior Backend / Integration + DevOps Engineer on GCP implementation, including Infrastructure as Code, CI/CD, environments, IAM, secrets management, monitoring, and production deployment
- Establish and own the team's AI-assisted and spec-driven development workflows, aligned with product management practice
- Stay hands-on: establish engineering patterns, lead architecture/design and critical code reviews, and contribute directly to the UMHS/rules engine and other architecture-critical parts of the codebase
- Act as the named point of technical accountability across engineers, architects, and delivery; surface trade-offs early and protect the pilot timeline from uncontrolled integration scope
- Deliver documentation and knowledge transfer (ADRs, runbooks, on-call playbooks) for joint long-term maintenance
