Technical Business Analyst - Migration Project
Summary
Bridges business users, client technical teams and engineers for a Sybase ASE to Microsoft SQL Server migration, analyzing legacy PowerBuilder, Java and batch systems to capture functional behavior and produce BRD, FRS and SRS documentation.
About the Project
We are supporting a client in the migration of a legacy application from Sybase ASE to Microsoft SQL Server, with the objective of modernising the database platform while maintaining the existing business functionality and system behaviour.
The system consists of a Sybase database with numerous stored procedures, triggers and views, a PowerBuilder desktop application, and a number of Java applications and batch jobs.
We are looking for a Technical Business Analyst who can bridge the gap between business users, the client's technical team and the engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for understanding and documenting existing business processes and system behaviour, gathering functional requirements, supporting migration analysis, and producing clear and comprehensive system documentation
Key Responsibilities
Work closely with business users and the client's technical team to understand existing business processes, system workflows and functional requirements.
Conduct interviews, workshops and requirement-gathering sessions with business and technical stakeholders.
Analyse the existing legacy system to understand how business requirements are implemented across the database and applications.
Translate business requirements into clear and structured functional requirements and system specifications.
Identify dependencies, gaps, exceptions and potential impacts arising from the database migration.
Clarify functional behaviour where existing system documentation is incomplete or outdated.
Support the project team in ensuring that the migration does not introduce unintended changes to existing business functionality.
Review and validate proposed system changes with relevant business and technical stakeholders.
Analyse existing Sybase-based applications, including database objects, stored procedures, screens, interfaces, batch processes and system workflows.
Work closely with database engineers and developers to understand the impact of Sybase-to-SQL Server conversion on application functionality.
Assist in mapping existing system functionality and business processes to the migrated SQL Server environment.
Identify functional impacts arising from differences in database behaviour, queries, data processing and application integration.
Support the technical team in investigating discrepancies between the legacy and migrated systems.
Participate in functional impact assessment, migration planning and defect investigation.
Documentation
Develop and maintain comprehensive system and functional documentation for the legacy and migrated systems.
Document current-state (AS-IS) and future-state (TO-BE) business processes and system workflows.
Prepare Functional Requirement Specifications (FRS), Business Requirement Documents (BRD), System Requirement Specifications (SRS) and other project documentation as required.
Document system functionality, business rules, data flows, interfaces, dependencies and exception handling.
Develop process flows, functional workflows, use cases and system interaction diagrams where required.
Maintain requirements traceability between business requirements, functional specifications, system changes and test scenarios.
Review and update existing documentation to ensure it accurately reflects the actual system behaviour.
Produce clear technical and functional documentation that can be used by both client stakeholders and offshore delivery teams.
Analyse and document discrepancies between the legacy and migrated systems.
Work with the technical team to determine whether differences are expected database behaviour or functional defects.
Support business users during UAT and facilitate clarification of functional issues.
Facilitate daily clarification and issue-resolution discussions with the offshore team.
Track requirements, clarifications, functional issues and outstanding decisions.
Communicate complex technical or system-related issues clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Ensure requirements and functional decisions are clearly communicated and documented throughout the project lifecycle.
Must Have
4+ years of experience as a Business Analyst, Technical Business Analyst, Systems Analyst or similar role.
Strong experience in functional requirement gathering, business process analysis and system analysis.
Proven experience producing functional and technical system documentation.
Strong ability to understand and document existing/legacy systems where documentation may be incomplete.
Experience working with database-driven enterprise applications.
Good understanding of SQL and relational databases, with the ability to understand tables, relationships, queries, stored procedures and data flows.
Experience working closely with software developers, database engineers and technical teams.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to trace business requirements through to system functionality and data processing.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
Comfortable working directly with clients and facilitating discussions with business and technical stakeholders.
Nice to Have
Experience with Sybase ASE and/or Microsoft SQL Server.
Experience with PowerBuilder, particularly DataWindows and database-driven desktop applications.
Understanding of T-SQL and Sybase T-SQL.
Experience documenting legacy applications and reverse-engineering existing system behaviour.
Experience with data mapping, data lineage and database migration validation.
Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Confluence, Visio or similar requirements/documentation platforms.
