Hardware Expert

Summary

Contract CAD expert who uses Python to translate 2D engineering schematics into precise 3D solid models (e.g., STEP files) for an AI training project. Day-to-day work involves programmatic CAD with tools like CadQuery, build123d, FreeCAD, or SolidWorks and validating geometry against strict dimensional and physical specs.

Hardware Expert

Pay: $50–$100/hour

Location: Global, fully remote

Job Type: Contractor (~15 hours per week)

Schedule: Flexible—you choose the hours and days you work, including weekends if desired

We are looking for a highly skilled CAD and mechanical-design expert to contribute to an AI training project involving technical drawings, computational geometry, programmatic CAD, and Python.

The work involves interpreting dimensioned engineering schematics and reproducing them as precise 3D solid models. A representative task may require constructing a mechanical component with complex curved geometry, implementing the model through Python, exporting it as a STEP file, and validating it against strict geometric and physical requirements.

This is not a general hardware-support or electronics role. Candidates should have strong CAD, spatial-reasoning, geometry, and technical problem-solving abilities.

What You’ll Work On

  1. Interpret dimensions and geometric relationships from technical drawings.
  2. Translate 2D schematics into accurate 3D mechanical models.
  3. Decompose complex components into appropriate geometric features.
  4. Model curved profiles, sweeps, lofts, fillets, chamfers, and Boolean operations.
  5. Use Python to generate or automate CAD geometry.
  6. Export valid, watertight solid models in formats such as STEP.
  7. Validate dimensions, topology, volume, surface area, and inertia properties.
  8. Diagnose subtle differences between expected and generated geometry.
  9. Produce reproducible solutions that work in clean technical environments.

Required Qualifications

  1. Strong Python programming ability.
  2. Hands-on experience with 3D CAD or computational geometry.
  3. Ability to interpret dimensioned engineering drawings and schematics.
  4. Strong 3D spatial reasoning and attention to geometric precision.
  5. Experience validating or troubleshooting CAD models.

Relevant tools may include build123d, CadQuery, FreeCAD, OpenCascade, Fusion 360, Onshape, SolidWorks, trimesh, or other CAD and geometry software. No specific tool is mandatory if your experience is transferable.

Formal education and years of professional experience are not strict requirements. Mechanical designers, CAD specialists, engineers, researchers, makers, and independent technical experts are encouraged to apply if they can demonstrate the relevant skills.

Process

  1. Apply to the role and complete the screening questions.
  2. Complete an AI interview of approximately 30 minutes.
  3. Complete the hiring manager review.

Compensation Structure

Compensation is output-based. Experts are paid per task that meets the project specifications. The time required to complete each task may vary depending on the expert’s experience and workflow.

Minimum submission requirements apply..

Start Timeline & Availability

We typically fill roles within 48 hours and are looking for experts who are ready to begin immediately. If selected, you will be expected to start your first task within 24–48 hours of completing onboarding.
